Sunset vows at the water's edge

They married on the sand in Nusa Dua at 6:05 pm, with the tide out and the reef flats catching the last of the light.

The arch was a full circle of dried pampas grass and white roses, built low enough that the horizon still ran straight through it. The aisle was white rose petals laid directly on the sand. Above it, woven rattan lanterns and festoon lights strung between two poles — switched on before the ceremony so they were already glowing when the sky turned.

Eighteen guests, all of them in cream, sand and blush. Ren in unlined linen, no tie. Hana in lace under a tulle cape that the sea breeze took care of on its own.

When they walked back down the aisle, everyone threw rose petals. The photograph of that moment — petals suspended in pink light, both of them laughing at the same thing — is the one they send to people who ask how the day was.

One long table on the sand

Dinner was set on the beach as the sky went dark: one long wooden table, a gauze runner, candles low enough not to sit between anyone's faces, and dried grasses and white roses down the middle.

Bamboo torches marked the edges. Rattan lanterns hung overhead. Everyone gave a speech, because with eighteen people you can.

Sparklers, and a crescent moon

Hana changed into a second dress for the party. The first dance happened on bare sand, in a circle of guests holding sparklers, under a crescent moon sitting over the water.

Nobody had shoes on by then. It went well past midnight.

"Eighteen people. Every one of them mattered to us. That is what I would tell anyone still writing their list." — Hana

**H2: Planning a small beach wedding in Bali

Intimate weddings are the majority of what we plan now, and they are consistently the happiest days.

Nusa Dua is the calm choice. Protected by a reef, so the water is flat and quiet — you can hear the vows. The clifftops photograph dramatically, but they are windy and loud, and you climb to get there. On a beach at low tide, guests simply walk down.

July is the clearest month. Dry season, lowest rainfall, and sunsets around 6:10 pm — which is why the ceremony was set at 6:05.

Small does not mean cheap — it means concentrated. The same budget across eighteen people instead of a hundred buys real flowers, a proper photographer, and a dinner nobody rushes.

A beach setup needs permissions and a plan. Tide times, a licensed stretch of sand, lighting rigged before dark, and a covered fallback you would actually be happy to use.
